PASOK has filed for the establishment of a parliamentary committee to investigate the responsibilities of Deputy Minister Christos Triantopoulos in the handling of the Tempi tragedy site.

This comes as public outrage over the Tempi disaster intensifies, with widespread accusations that the government has evaded justice, responsibility, and engaged in a cover-up.

The center-left opposition party alleges that Triantopoulos, who served as Deputy Prime Minister, ordered the landfilling of the Tempi site before a thorough investigation could take place, which could lead to criminal liabilities.

In its request, PASOK cites the conclusion of a prosecutor’s report from the Larissa Court of Appeals dated July 15, 2024, which they claim implicates Triantopoulos in mishandling the scene of the tragedy.

The opposition party also leveled serious accusations at Konstantinos Tasoulas, the former Speaker of the Greek Parliament, who has been nominated by New Democracy as a candidate for President of the Republic. PASOK asserts that Tasoulas bears responsibility for concealing critical evidence from the parliamentary plenary session, accusing him of failing to act on key findings from the investigation.

PASOK’s allegations extend to the Prime Minister himself, accusing Kyriakos Mitsotakis of protecting Deputy Minister Triantopoulos. PASOK questions who gave Triantopoulos the directive to take over the coordination of this cleanup effort, stating:  “Who instructed Mr. Triandopoulos to coordinate the ‘field restoration’ after the tragedy? Where and why are you hiding your close associate, Mr Mitsotakis?”

The demands for an investigation into Triantopoulos and Tasoulas come amidst rumors that Triantopoulos could be removed from his position in a government reshuffle.  PASOK’s call for further inquiry remains a pointed challenge to the government’s handling of the aftermath of the Tempi disaster.
