A natural phenomenon in the skies over greater Athens on Thursday evening was explained by meteorologist and weatherman Thodoris Kolydas a day later, possibly disappointing the country’s “UFO watchers” and X-Files fans.
Taking to his FB page, Kolydas said the celestial flash observed at roughly 8 p.m. (18.00 GMT) in south-central Greece was a streaking meteor.
Footage soon emerged from webcams facing the skies and, expectedly, went viral on Greek-language social media.
According to the meteorologist, this type of phenomenon usually is observed because while in the the early morning hours the earth’s rotation speed is added to the meteor’s speed, during the evening hours the velocities involved is reduced.
