The Greek island of Nisyros has been included on UNESCO’s Global Geoparks network, making it the 10th destination in Greece to make it into the list.

The news was announced earlier this week, during a special ceremony held in Paris, in the presence of Giorgos Koumoutsakos, Permanent Delegate of Greece to UNESCO, and Nisyros Mayor Christofis Koroneos.

UNESCO Global Geoparks are geographical areas featuring unique geological landscapes that are managed with a focus on protection, education, and sustainable development. Education and environmental awareness are central to maintaining Geopark status.

There are currently 241 designated geopark sites in 51 countries.

The Nisyros Geopark spans 481km2 and includes 24 geosites and 10 georoutes. A key highlight is the Stefanos Crater, one of the most impressive hydrothermal craters in the world. At the same time, the island’s protected Natura 2000 areas enhance its significance as a destination of valuable biodiversity.

This new distinction opens pathways for sustainable development, positioning Nisyros as a model of sustainable development.

Nisyros’ success is the result of long-term scientific research led by the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA). Under the guidance of Professor Evi Nomikou, Nisyros’ unique character as an active volcanic field of global importance was thoroughly documented and highlighted.

“As members of the Department of Geology and Geoenvironment, we have worked for years to scientifically prove what nature has created with wonder: Nisyros is a living, active volcanic laboratory unique in the Aegean. The recognition by UNESCO justifies the role of NKUA as a pioneer in the protection and promotion of the geological treasures of our country, connecting cutting-edge research with the local community,” Nomikou said.
