18-Month-Old Girl Dies in Crete as Police Investigate Case

A toddler died at Heraklion University Hospital despite doctors’ efforts to save her, while authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding her transfer and care before her death.

An 18-month-old girl died on Friday night at the University Hospital of Heraklion in Crete, despite a 48-minute effort by doctors to save her life.

The child had been urgently taken to the hospital by her 45-year-old grandfather, who had been caring for her while her parents were away from Crete for work.

According to information from local reports, the toddler, who was of Roma background, had been unwell in recent days. Police sources said she had been examined by a pediatrician a few days earlier and had been given medication.

However, her health condition worsened, leading her grandfather to take her to the University Hospital of Heraklion, where doctors found the child showing signs of sepsis, according to the same reports.

During hospitalization, the girl suffered cardiac and respiratory arrest, and medical staff immediately began resuscitation efforts. Despite their attempts, the child died.

Following an order from a prosecutor, the grandfather was arrested on suspicion of endangering a minor, as authorities investigate the full circumstances of the tragic incident.
