Police have arrested two people as part of an ongoing investigation into the fatal shooting of a 43-year-old woman at a shooting range in Malevizi, on the large island of Crete.
Authorities detained the president of the local shooting club, who is considered responsible for the operation of the facility, and an assistant shooting instructor. Both face charges as part of the preliminary investigation into the circumstances surrounding Saturday’s fatal incident.
Investigators are also examining the process through which the woman was allowed to participate in the training session. According to local media reports, she had been issued a temporary 48-hour sports participation permit. Police are now focusing on the authenticity of the signature on the relevant document, with a forensic handwriting examination ordered as part of the investigation.
The woman, who had traveled from Thessaloniki to Crete for a short holiday, attended a scheduled shooting practice session on Saturday morning at the Malevizi facility.
According to information gathered by investigators, shortly before the incident she reportedly asked the instructor to move farther away, saying his presence made her feel uncomfortable. Investigators are examining evidence indicating that, after the instructor stepped back, she turned the firearm on herself and fired. Authorities have not yet announced definitive conclusions, and the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation.
She was rushed to Venizeleio Hospital in Heraklion in critical condition after sustaining severe head injuries. She succumbed to her injuries several hours later.
