A strong 5.0 magnitude earthquake, the most powerful recorded today, struck 21 kilometers southwest of Arkesini, Amorgos, at 21:05 local time. The tremor, along with a 4.7 magnitude quake that occurred just ten minutes earlier, was felt in Athens, according to reports from the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens.

This evening’s seismic activity follows a series of earlier tremors in the region. At 17:16, the seismological network recorded a 4.4 magnitude earthquake in the maritime area between Santorini and Amorgos.

Earlier in the day, two additional tremors were reported within minutes of each other. At 13:54, a 4.1 magnitude earthquake was detected 19 kilometers south-southeast of Arkesini, Amorgos, at a distance of 231 kilometers southeast of Athens. Just five minutes later, at 13:59, another 4.5 magnitude quake occurred 22 kilometers south-southwest of Arkesini, Amorgos.

The Unified National Seismological Network continues to closely monitor the situation, as the islands remain under emergency status.

No immediate damage or injuries have been reported, but authorities are urging the public to remain cautious.

According to the latest statements from Efthymios Lekkas, Head of Greece’s Earthquake Planning and Protection Organization, the accumulated energy in the region is gradually dissipating, ruling out the likelihood of an earthquake of magnitude 6 or higher.
