A 70-year-old man was found unresponsive after a fire broke out in an apartment in Kallithea, a suburb of Athens, early on Sunday.

Firefighters discovered the man during efforts to extinguish the blaze. He was taken by ambulance to Evangelismos Hospital without vital signs.

Another person was also found inside the apartment and was experiencing breathing difficulties but declined to be taken to hospital.

The cause of the fire remains unknown and is under investigation by the Fire Service.

According to the Fire Service, 12 firefighters and four fire engines were deployed to bring the blaze under control.

The incident comes just one week after another apartment fire was reported in Kallithea.
