A group of 75 migrants was successfully rescued on Sunday morning after their sailing vessel issued a distress signal southeast of the island of Karpathos, in the southeastern Aegean, according to Greek maritime authorities.
The operation was coordinated by Greece’s Unified Search and Rescue Coordination Center (EKSED) and took place approximately 14.4 nautical miles off the southeastern coast of the island. The incident prompted an immediate response from the Hellenic Coast Guard and nearby vessels.
The passenger and vehicle ferry Blue Star Xios, which was in the vicinity, swiftly responded to the emergency and safely took all 75 individuals on board. A Hellenic Coast Guard rescue boat was also dispatched to the scene to assist in the operation.
At the time of the incident, weather conditions were moderate, with west-northwesterly winds blowing at around 5 on the Beaufort scale.
Authorities have not yet released details about the migrants’ nationalities or intended destination. The group is expected to undergo standard health and identification checks following their transfer to safety.
