Authorities were alerted Tuesday, July 29, after a suspected anti-tank mine was discovered near the shoreline at Karyani Beach in the Municipality of Pangaio, in the Kavala regional unit of northern Greece.
The Port Authority of Eleftheres was notified by a citizen who reported the presence of an object believed to be military ammunition.
According to the Hellenic Coast Guard, the device was found on the coastline, lying on the sandy seabed approximately 10 centimeters from the shore, near the Karyes settlement.
Initial assessments indicated that the object was heavily corroded, suggesting it had remained in the marine environment for a long period.
Area Secured as Authorities Prepare Removal
Following the discovery, port authorities immediately marked off the area to prevent any risk to swimmers and people passing nearby.
The Central Port Authority of Kavala informed the relevant military service, which will be responsible for identifying the device and carrying out its safe removal or neutralization according to established procedures.
Authorities urged the public not to approach or move objects that appear to be military material, even if they look damaged, rusted or inactive.
Citizens are advised to immediately notify the Coast Guard or police if they encounter any suspicious objects.
