The Panepistimio metro station in central Athens will remain closed from 10:00 a.m. on Thursday following an order by Greek police, authorities announced.

According to an official statement, trains on Line 2 will continue to pass through the station without stopping for the duration of the closure, disrupting service in one of the city’s busiest transit hubs.

The shutdown comes as part of broader operational changes affecting the Athens metro network this week. Since Monday, several key stations on Line 2—including Syntagma, Acropolis, and Syngrou-Fix—have been closing early from Sunday through Thursday at 9:40 p.m., roughly two and a half hours earlier than usual.

During these evening hours, train services on Line 2 operate in two separate sections: from Anthoupoli to Panepistimio and from Neos Kosmos to Elliniko, limiting through travel across central Athens.

To help offset the disruption, transport authorities have introduced a temporary bus route connecting Panepistimio and Agios Ioannis stations. The service runs nightly from 9:40 p.m. until the end of metro operations, stopping at key points along the route, including central Athens and major transit links.

Officials acknowledged the inconvenience for commuters but said the measures are necessary to carry out essential works aimed at improving daily transportation services.
