Rail services on Athens’ suburban railway network were disrupted on Wednesday after severe thunderstorms caused power supply failures, forcing the suspension of train operations, rail operator Hellenic Train said.
The company said the disruption followed information from infrastructure manager OSE (Hellenic Railways Organisation), which reported that intense weather conditions had damaged the power supply system serving the Athens suburban rail network.
As a result, rail traffic and electrification across the network were suspended, affecting all suburban services with delays, cancellations and route modifications.
Hellenic Train said it was working in close coordination with OSE to restore power and resume normal rail operations as soon as possible.
The disruptions came as heavy rain, thunderstorms and frequent lightning affected large parts of the Athens metropolitan area, causing flooding, road closures and other transport disruptions.
