The Attica Taxi Drivers’ Union (SATA) has called for a zero-tolerance approach to misconduct within the taxi industry, urging authorities to step up inspections and enforcement following repeated public complaints about overcharging, fare violations and unprofessional behavior by a minority of drivers.
In a statement, the union stressed that such practices are unacceptable and do not reflect the overwhelming majority of licensed taxi drivers, who, it said, carry out their work responsibly, professionally and in accordance with the law.
SATA warned that the actions of a small number of drivers are enough to damage the reputation of the entire profession, undermining public trust in a service that plays a key role in public passenger transport.
The union said it would show no tolerance toward drivers who exploit passengers, violate regulations or tarnish the image of the profession. It emphasized that those who operate outside the legal framework do not represent the taxi industry and have no place among professionals committed to serving the public.
SATA also called on the government and enforcement authorities to intensify inspections and consistently apply existing regulations, including imposing penalties wherever violations are identified. According to the union, protecting passengers and maintaining confidence in taxi services is a shared responsibility between authorities and the industry.
The union also encouraged passengers to take an active role in protecting their rights by ensuring the taximeter is switched on at the start of every journey, familiarizing themselves with official fares, always requesting a legal receipt at the end of the trip, and staying informed about their rights and obligations when using taxi services.
Describing taxis as an essential part of the public transport system that serves both residents and visitors every day, SATA said that trust between drivers and passengers is fundamental to the sector’s proper functioning.
The union concluded by reaffirming its commitment to supporting law-abiding professionals, condemning all forms of misconduct and working to improve the quality of taxi services in order to strengthen public confidence and preserve the credibility of Greece’s taxi industry.
