Authorities are preparing to recover the body of a 34-year-old diver from the “Devil’s Well” in Vouliagmeni on Saturday, March 28. The victim was found trapped at a depth of approximately 30 meters on Wednesday, March 25, following a diving expedition.
The diver had been accompanied by a friend, who managed to survive the dangerous dive. The surviving diver described how a sudden increase in the underwater current pulled the 34-year-old into the interior of the tunnel. “We were just three meters apart, and before I could react, I saw him disappear from my sight in two seconds,” he said.
Despite being close, the companion attempted to save him by throwing a rope, but it broke under the strain. “He grabbed the rope, and I pulled from one side while he pulled from the other, but the rope couldn’t hold and snapped,” he added.
Undeterred, the surviving diver tried other methods for nearly 40 minutes. He recalled a thick rope he had seen earlier, which he retrieved and lowered into the cave for the missing diver. Using a scooter to navigate the strong current, the 34-year-old tried to reach his companion but could not overcome the flow.
“At one point, I myself was in danger when the railing I was holding onto broke, but I managed to grab another. I even let my scooter and backup tank drift into the tunnel, hoping he could use them to escape until help arrived,” he said.
The recovery operation is scheduled for Saturday, and authorities have confirmed that all necessary safety measures will be in place.
