Bus Driver Beaten in Traffic Dispute in Athens Suburb

A minor traffic accident in Athens’ Ilion suburb escalated into a violent assault on a bus driver, highlighting a growing wave of road rage incidents across the capital.

Tensions, arguments and even violent assaults between motorists have become an almost daily occurrence on the streets of Greek cities, often triggered by seemingly minor incidents.

In the Athens suburb of Ilion, a traffic accident that resulted only in material damage escalated into a shocking act of violence when a motorcyclist allegedly attacked and severely beat a bus driver.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, June 3, following a collision that unexpectedly took a violent turn. Video footage reportedly captured the assault in detail, showing the motorcyclist repeatedly striking the bus driver in the head.

The victim later recounted that he had stopped at a bus stop to allow passengers to disembark when a man approached him, accusing him of causing damage and demanding that he leave. The bus driver reportedly responded that he had done nothing wrong and pointed out that around 30 passengers had been on board and could confirm what had happened.

According to his account, the man insisted that the bus had knocked over his motorcycle. When the driver got off the bus to inspect the alleged point of impact, the motorcyclist allegedly began punching him repeatedly.

Within minutes, police officers and an ambulance from Greece’s emergency medical service arrived at the scene. The injured bus driver was transported to KAT General Hospital for treatment, while the motorcyclist was arrested.

The assault is one of dozens of violent incidents between drivers that are reported on Athens roads on a regular basis.

Among the cases recorded in recent months are:

• Pangrati: A 23-year-old woman was reportedly the victim of a brutal assault following a dispute over a parking space.

• Galatsi: Two drivers allegedly became involved in a physical altercation, with one arrested and the other taken to hospital.

• Central Athens: A 58-year-old man was reported to have attacked a 38-year-old with a wrench.
