The 18-year-old mother in Chania who was arrested over the abuse of her infant, who at the time was 17-days-old, and is now hospitalized in critical condition, was released under strict restrictive conditions after testifying before the investigating magistrate.
According to the ruling issued by the investigating magistrate and prosecutor, the defendant was placed under an absolute ban on any contact with the newborn, required to enroll in a psychological support program, barred from leaving the country, and ordered to report to her local police station once a month.
During her testimony, the 18-year-old claimed she had not intended to harm her child. She attributed her actions to severe psychological distress, which she said stemmed from physical and sexual abuse she herself had suffered in the past.
Meanwhile, the 19-day-old boy continues to fight for his life, intubated in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Venizeleio Hospital with extensive brain damage. His doctors are continuing their efforts and are expected to reassess the severity of his condition following a scheduled brain MRI.
