The Samaria Gorge will remain closed to visitors on Thursday, September 24, 2026, at both of its entrances.
According to an announcement from the Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency (NECCA), the decision was made based on the updated forecast from the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (HNMS). The forecast calls for heavy rainfall and/or thunderstorms on Thursday, with up to 11.5 mm expected in the Xyloskalo area and up to 11.5 mm in the Agia Roumeli area.
Since these amounts exceed the limits approved by the Regional Unit of Chania for the gorge’s operation, the National Park will be closed on Thursday. The announcement noted that if HNMS issues an updated forecast showing improved weather, a new announcement will be released at 6:30 a.m. on Thursday.
