A newborn baby was discovered dead inside an abandoned house in a residential settlement in Xanthi on the morning of Monday, May 11. The circumstances surrounding the infant’s death remain unknown at this time.
According to Greece’s public broadcaster ERT, the criminal investigations unit that took over the case located the mother and placed her under arrest. The baby’s body was transferred to Xanthi General Hospital so that the cause of death could be determined.
A forensic examination will establish whether the newborn was stillborn or whether some other complication led to its death.
For the time being, the mother is facing a charge of endangering a minor. No additional charges have been filed against her, though the indictment may be revised depending on the results of the forensic report.
