An elderly man narrowly escaped a life-threatening situation after being bitten by a snake on Wednesday afternoon, July 2, at a construction site for a solar park near the town of Makrakomi, in the region of Phthiotis, central Greece.

According to local reports, the incident occurred while the 81-year-old landowner was present at the site. Fortunately, a technical crew from the Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator (HEDNO) happened to be nearby, responding to a power issue in the area. Their timely intervention is credited with saving the man’s life.

Silent Signs of Danger

As the HEDNO technicians worked on restoring the electricity supply, they reportedly called out to the elderly man to confirm whether power had returned. Although he was standing upright and visible to the crew, he remained unresponsive.

Sensing something was wrong, the technicians approached him and were alarmed when he quietly informed them that he had been bitten on the hand by a snake. The area was already showing signs of swelling, suggesting the bite had occurred several minutes earlier.

Rapid Response Saves a Life

Without hesitation, the HEDNO team placed the man in their service vehicle and transported him to the center of the village, where an ambulance from the Makrakomi Health Center had already been dispatched. The handoff took place near the area of Palaiovracha, allowing paramedics to complete the transfer swiftly.

At the health center, medical staff administered the necessary treatment for the snake bite. Reports indicate that the man’s condition quickly began to improve, thanks to the coordinated and rapid response of both the technicians and the emergency medical team.

Snake Encounters on the Rise

This incident adds to a recent string of snake-related events in Greece, including reports of snakes entering public spaces like hair salons. Local experts frequently warn about the presence of venomous snakes such as vipers during the warmer months and advise caution, especially in rural and outdoor areas.
