Α ferry boat plying the Nea Styra-Aghia Marina route in the southern Evoikos Gulf – connecting the large island of Evia with the mainland east of Athens – ran aground on a reef Tuesday afternoon, with the vessel stuck and listing slightly.
The reef in question, near a rocky outcrop, is mapped and well-known to mariners active in the specific sea region.
The ferry boat, Panaghia Paravouniotissa, was carrying 105 passengers and nine crewmembers to the small Aghia Marina harbor on the mainland. Another ferry boat and a coast guard patrol boat were on standby to transfer the passengers if the vessel remained grounded or damaged, with pleasure craft and commercial fishing boats later arriving as well.
All of the passengers were instructed to wear life vests.

Later reports said the passengers would be returned to Nea Styra, 10 minutes away by boat.
The specific route is serviced by several ferry boats sailing back and forth on a daily schedule. The journey time is roughly 50 minutes from port to port and with high passenger traffic recorded during the summer months and weekends.
