Greek firefighting crews were battling two separate wildfires on Tuesday, one near Epidaurus in the Peloponnese and another threatening a village on the island of Crete.
At Adami in the municipality of Epidaurus, located in Argolis, a blaze broke out in agricultural and forest land, leading to the deployment of 60 firefighters, three on-foot response teams, 16 vehicles, two helicopters, and two fixed-wing aircraft.
Municipal water tankers and heavy machinery from the Epidaurus municipality also supported the operation. An arson investigation unit from Argolis has been dispatched to the scene to examine the cause of the fire.
In a separate fire on the island of Crete, a large blaze was burning at midday near the village of Vorizia in the municipality of Festos, Heraklion, with flames reported to be very close to nearby residences. Some 55 firefighters, 18 vehicles, two Special Disaster Response Unit teams, volunteers, and two helicopters are engaged in the firefighting effort, supported by municipal water tankers from Festos.
The deputy regional governor of Heraklion, Nikos Syrigonakis, said houses were not currently under threat. A 112 emergency alert was sent to residents of the wider area shortly before 3:00 p.m., advising them to remain on standby.
