Severe flooding across several regions of Greece has caused widespread damage to farmland and infrastructure, leaving local communities on high alert and farmers facing significant losses.

In northeastern Greece, residents remain on standby after days of heavy rainfall led to river overflows and large-scale flooding. Authorities issued emergency alerts urging residents to stay prepared, as additional water inflows are expected from neighboring countries.

Local officials described the situation as critical, with vast areas of agricultural land submerged under several feet of water. “The damage is entirely to crops and infrastructure. Our farmers have been devastated, and the municipality has suffered enormous losses,” a local deputy mayor said.

Flooding intensified after a levee breach sent large volumes of water into surrounding farmland, worsening conditions in already saturated areas. Emergency crews have been working for weeks to pump water from affected zones, while officials continue door-to-door warnings in vulnerable communities.

The impact extends beyond one region. In western parts of the country, continued rainfall has flooded agricultural areas, delaying or threatening the upcoming planting season. Farmers in southern regions are also reporting prolonged inundation of fields, putting this year’s production at risk.

Meanwhile, transportation has been disrupted, with a major highway remaining closed for weeks due to landslides and flood-related damage. Traffic has been diverted to older road networks as crews work to stabilize the area and restore at least partial access in the coming weeks.
