The Greek government has presented the National Electronic Health Record, a system designed to centralize medical data from both public and private healthcare providers.
The announcement was made on Monday by Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis, Digital Governance Minister Dimitris Papastergiou, and Deputy Health Minister Irini Agapidaki.
The National Electronic Health Record is an expansion of the existing MyHealth app and will provide a unified medical record accessible by both citizens and healthcare professionals. Citizens will be able to view their records through MyHealth, while doctors will use the platform at doctor.ehealthrecord.gr.
The rollout of the National Electronic Health Record is taking place in stages:
- March 2025: The system includes imaging test results, medical certificates, appointments, and exams.
- July 2025: Additional data such as surgeries, prescribed medications, hospitalizations, and biopsies will be integrated.
- End of 2025: The system is expected to be fully operational, incorporating national medical registries.
Additionally, the Disability Certification Centers (KEPA) will be phased out by the end of 2025, as disability certification will be handled digitally through the new system.
The National Electronic Health Record will compile patient data from various sources, including hospitals, private health providers, diagnostic centers, and electronic prescription databases. It will store key medical details, including demographic information, medical history, medications, allergies, vaccinations, laboratory tests, imaging reports, and vital signs.
A major challenge in implementing the system is ensuring interoperability between different healthcare systems. According to Digital Governance Minister Dimitris Papastergiou, the platform will use artificial intelligence to facilitate communication between public and private sector data sources.
Deputy Health Minister Irini Agapidaki highlighted that the new system will eliminate the need for physical visits to KEPA for disability certification, streamlining the process. The full implementation of the National Electronic Health Record is expected to improve the efficiency of healthcare services by providing doctors and emergency responders with quick access to comprehensive patient records.
