A Dutch tourist died while reportedly attempting to rescue a friend who struggled while swimming off the resort of Malia, on the north coast of Crete on Wednesday, a tragedy witnessed by three children who had remained aboard the pair’s leased boat.

According to local media reports, the two women, both believed to be around 40 years old, had rented a small inflatable speedboat from the nearby resort of Hersonissos for a day trip. Three minors were also on board, including two children under the age of five and a teenager.

Authorities said one of the women entered the water for a swim but soon began experiencing distress and struggled to stay afloat. Her friend jumped into the sea to assist her.

The rescue attempt ended in a single drowning. The woman who initially encountered difficulties was ultimately rescued, but her friend became exhausted while trying to keep her afloat and lost consciousness.

The incident unfolded in front of the three children, who remained aboard the vessel and cried out for help. Their shouts alerted people nearby, while jet ski pilots from neighboring water sports businesses rushed to the scene.

The Dutch woman was pulled unconscious from the water and brought ashore, where paramedics made repeated efforts to revive her. She was later pronounced dead.

The latest fatality comes during another busy summer season on Greece’s coasts, as authorities repeatedly urge swimmers and recreational boat users to exercise caution, particularly during periods of high temperatures, rough sea conditions or physical exhaustion. Authorities are expected to investigate the exact cause of the death, including whether a medical emergency contributed to the drowning.
