Greek health authorities remain on high alert after 12 additional deaths linked to flu complications were recorded nationwide, according to the latest epidemiological report released by the country’s public health agency. The data also show 19 patients currently being treated in intensive care units (ICUs) with severe influenza.

Although flu positivity in the general community has shown a marginal decline, the burden on the healthcare system has continued to grow over the past reporting week. Hospital admissions rose to 649, up from 613 the previous week, highlighting sustained pressure on hospitals.

Since the start of the current surveillance period, Greece has reported 36 deaths and 105 ICU admissions due to laboratory-confirmed influenza. Health officials stress that these figures reflect severe cases and underline the ongoing risk posed by seasonal flu, particularly to vulnerable populations.

Dominant Flu Strain Identified

Laboratory surveillance indicates that influenza type A remains overwhelmingly dominant, accounting for nearly all tested samples. Within this category, the A(H3) subtype continues to prevail over A(H1)pdm09, a pattern closely monitored by health experts due to its association with more severe illness in certain age groups.

COVID-19 Stable, RSV on the Rise

In contrast, the situation regarding COVID-19 appears relatively stable. New hospital admissions linked to the virus fell to 119 from 138 the previous week, while eight deaths and two new intubations were recorded. Overall positivity levels showed no significant change.

However, the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is showing an upward trend in positivity rates, both in primary healthcare settings and hospitals. This development is adding further strain to the healthcare system during the peak respiratory virus season.

Call for Vaccination and Early Care

With multiple respiratory viruses circulating simultaneously, health officials are strongly urging vaccination for vulnerable groups and individuals at high risk. They also emphasize the importance of seeking medical advice promptly at the first signs of flu symptoms, particularly to ensure timely access to antiviral treatment.

Experts stress that vaccination remains the most effective tool for preventing severe illness, alongside basic hygiene measures aimed at reducing transmission.
