Heavy passenger traffic was reported Tuesday at Attica’s main ports as the final week of August got underway, with travelers returning from Greece’s islands while others continued to take advantage of the remaining days of summer for vacations.

Shipping and Island Policy Minister Vassilis Kikilias visited the Port of Piraeus in the morning, accompanied by Hellenic Coast Guard Chief Vice Admiral Christos Kontorouchas. Kikilias was briefed on measures being implemented to manage the increased passenger traffic.

Speaking at Gate E2 in front of the passenger and vehicle ferry Ariadne, Kikilias said the coast guard was working to facilitate passengers and ensure the smooth operation of ferry services.

“These days, the return of travelers from our islands to the country’s major ports, and particularly Piraeus, is reaching its peak,” Kikilias said.

He urged travelers to be patient and arrive at ports on time so that boarding could take place safely and without problems.

“The Hellenic Coast Guard is here to serve the public with courtesy and respect, but also to enforce the law,” he said, praising coast guard personnel for their professionalism and dedication throughout the summer.

Kikilias also highlighted the coast guard’s role in responding to wildfires that broke out across Greece this year, noting that its personnel helped evacuate hundreds of people from affected areas.

Tourism season continues

Kikilias emphasized that the tourism season is not over and that the relevant authorities must remain fully prepared.

“Our islands, tourism, coastal shipping and services are a very important part of the Greek economy,” he said. “They generate revenue that returns to Greek families, professionals and family businesses. That is why we protect them, support them and do everything possible to strengthen them.”

Recent figures show the continued scale of passenger movement through Attica’s ports. A total of 33,372 passengers departed from ports in Attica, while 50,707 people arrived at the region’s entry points.

The figures reflect a significant return of vacationers, although passenger traffic heading toward the islands has not declined noticeably.

44 ferry departures scheduled

According to state broadcaster ERT, 22 ferry departures from Piraeus were scheduled for Tuesday, serving destinations in the Aegean.

Traffic was also elevated at Attica’s other major ports. Fourteen ferries were scheduled to depart from Rafina, while eight departures were planned from Lavrio, bringing the total scheduled departures from the three ports to 44.

The scene at Piraeus reflects the late-August travel pattern: many passengers are returning from their vacations, while others are only now setting off for an island getaway.

The Cyclades and the Saronic Gulf islands remain among the most popular choices. Some travelers are opting for short trips even as August draws to a close.
