Authorities in the Greek city of Chalcis have arrested a woman and her partner on suspicion of repeatedly abusing and assaulting the woman’s elderly mother in a case that has shocked the local community.
The victim, a 70-year-old woman, was allegedly subjected to sustained violence inside her home, before managing to report the abuse to police, leading to the arrest of the suspects.
Alleged repeated violence inside the home
According to accounts, the elderly woman was attacked by her 46-year-old daughter and the daughter’s 47-year-old partner. Neighbors reported hearing screams from the property, suggesting that similar incidents may have occurred previously.
Witnesses described hearing the victim call for help on earlier occasions, raising concerns that the abuse may have been ongoing for some time before authorities were alerted.
Severe physical assault reported
The most recent incident is alleged to have escalated into a severe physical attack, during which the woman was beaten and left injured on the floor. Reports indicate she was then dragged into a different room and subjected to further humiliating treatment, including being forced to stand on one leg as a form of punishment.
Neighbors later said they initially feared the woman had died due to the severity of the situation and the sudden silence from the property.
Victim eventually reported the abuse
Despite visible injuries, the situation reportedly went unreported for a period of time, with the victim left without assistance from those nearby.
Eventually, the elderly woman managed to alert authorities and formally report the abuse. Police officers responded immediately and arrested the two suspects.
Medical care and ongoing investigation
The victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment, where she remains under medical care for her injuries. The case is now under investigation, with authorities examining the full extent of the alleged abuse and whether previous incidents had been reported or witnessed.
