Rising living costs continue to weigh heavily on Greek households, with nearly half of respondents saying their financial situation has deteriorated over the past year and a similar proportion indicating they will not take a summer vacation, according to results of the second part of an Alco opinion poll.

The survey found that 47% of respondents described their financial situation as worse than a year ago, while 45% said it was unchanged and just 7% reported an improvement.

Asked about their summer plans, 47% said they would not take a vacation this year, compared with 44% who said they would, while 9% were undecided or declined to answer.

Accommodation costs emerged as the most significant deterrent to travel, with 76% of respondents saying they had a major impact on their decision not to go on vacation. Another 8% said they had a minor impact, while 14% said they had no effect.

The need to cover other household expenses was cited as a major factor by 74% of respondents, underscoring the pressure inflation and day-to-day living costs continue to place on family budgets. A further 13% said it had a minor impact, while 11% said it had none.

Transportation costs also remained a significant obstacle, with 59% saying ticket prices had greatly influenced their decision not to travel. Another 19% reported a limited impact, while 16% said fares had not affected their plans.

Food costs were another concern, with 49% saying they had strongly influenced their vacation decisions, while 23% reported a smaller impact and 20% said they had no effect.

Among those planning to travel, 59% said they expected to take roughly the same amount of vacation time as last year, while 21% anticipated taking fewer days off and 15% expected to spend more time away.

The survey also found that cost considerations continue to shape accommodation choices. Staying in a personally owned or family-owned property was the most popular option, selected by 46% of respondents. Hotels ranked second at 37%, while 12% said they planned to use Airbnb-style rentals and just 5% opted for camping.

The findings reflect broader concerns about affordability that have featured prominently in public opinion surveys in recent months, with rising housing costs, persistent inflationary pressures and the overall cost of living continuing to rank among the most important issues for Greek households. Concerns over the expense of domestic tourism, particularly accommodation and ferry fares to the islands, have also remained a recurring theme as the summer season approaches.
