What Gen Z, Millennials and Gen X buy, how much they spend and how they pay is laid out in the latest edition of Focus on Tech Life Tips, a report from Focus Bari on how online shopping is changing in Greece. According to the survey, 80% of Greek internet users aged 16 to 64 have made an online purchase in the past six months, with only small differences between generations: 76% for Gen Z and 82% for both Millennials and Gen X.
Millennials, aged 30 to 45, appear to set the pace for online shopping. They make the most purchases, 29 on average over a six month period, and also post the highest total spending, reaching 1,159 euros.
Gen Z, aged 16 to 29, made 27 purchases worth 868 euros over the same period, while Gen X, aged 46 to 61, made 23 purchases worth 986 euros.
The survey shows that while the categories people shop for overlap, each generation’s digital basket looks different. Clothes, shoes and delivery form a common core of online purchases across all three generations, with clothing topping the list for each one (44% for Gen Z, 41% for Millennials, 43% for Gen X). Beyond that, spending patterns diverge by generation, with Gen Z leaning more toward transportation and travel.
How they pay
Debit cards remain the main payment method across all three generations, while Gen Z stands out for its use of digital wallets, at 41%, compared with 34% for Millennials and 26% for Gen X. Gen Z appears most comfortable with instant digital payments, Millennials show a stronger focus on managing daily and household budgets through debit cards, and Gen X keeps a more traditional mix, relying more on credit cards.
In terms of transaction value, spending reflects each generation’s priorities: Gen Z focuses on new beginnings and travel, Millennials on home and family, and Gen X more on travel, experiences and self improvement.
