In July, Elon Musk announced plans to create a feature-length adaptation of Homer’s epic, describing it as “historically accurate.” He said his version, generated using Grok Imagine, would be completed by the end of the year.

“Before this year ends, Grok Imagine will make a full-length movie of The Odyssey that is historically accurate and true to the art of Homer,” Musk wrote on X, accompanying his post with a three-minute AI-generated video based on the epic that had been shared by another user.

On Friday the Grok Imagine account on X released a seven-minute episode of an ‘Odyssey’ series, crediting a creative collaboration with Wonder Studios and director Dev Walker, who specializes in AI filmmaking.

The release marks an initial step toward Musk’s stated ambition, although it does not establish that a full-length feature film has been completed.

The July announcement drew a sharp response from Scott Derrickson, director of ‘Doctor Strange’ and ‘The Black Phone’, who criticized Musk’s understanding of cinema and art in a post on X.

“Clearly @elonmusk doesn’t know shit about cinema & he stopped reading in his 20s,” Derrickson wrote. “His opinions on art are worthless.”

Musk’s announcement also followed months of criticism of Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of ‘The Odyssey’, particularly its casting choices, including Elliot Page as Sinon and Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy.

Musk argued that Nolan had selected the actors to satisfy the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ representation and inclusion standards for Oscar eligibility.

In March, Musk described Nolan as “an anti-White racist,” claiming that the director had cast Nyong’o because “He wants the awards.”

The Academy’s inclusion standards for best picture eligibility, introduced in 2020 and implemented from 2024, require films to meet two of four criteria covering on-screen representation, creative leadership, production opportunities and audience development. The rules do not simply require directors to cast actors from particular racial backgrounds.

Musk’s criticism of Nolan intensified after the director confirmed Nyong’o’s casting as Helen of Troy. The billionaire accused Nolan of compromising his artistic integrity over the decision.
