Clearing overgrown lots is one of the most significant obligations property owners have during the fire prevention season (1st of March – 31st of October), playing a key role in reducing the risk of wildfires breaking out and spreading.
For this reason, the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection announced an extension of the deadline for completing the required clearing work, pushing it back to June 22.
The decision was made following a recommendation by the Risk Assessment Committee, which reviewed recent meteorological data and the weather conditions of the past several weeks. Based on its findings, the Committee concluded it was appropriate to grant a brief extension so that property owners and the relevant authorities could complete the necessary clearing work safely and effectively.
A Warning Against Complacency
Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Evangelos Tournas emphasized that the extension should not be taken as a reason for complacency, as weather conditions in the coming days are expected to increase the risk of wildfires. He called on all property owners subject to the obligation to move quickly and complete the required work before the deadline.
He also noted that more than 373,000 lot-clearing declarations have been submitted so far through the state’s dedicated digital platform (akatharista.apps.gov.gr), reflecting a strong public response to the fire prevention effort.
Clearing a lot is not only a legal requirement but also an act of responsibility toward human life, the natural environment, and private property. Removing dry grass, branches, and flammable materials significantly reduces the risk of ignition and contributes to the overall fire resilience of local communities.
Property owners are encouraged to make use of the June 22 extension and complete all required work without delay.
