A stricter enforcement framework for the clearing and declaration of vacant land plots is underway in Greece ahead of the upcoming wildfire season, with authorities extending the compliance deadline to June 15 and warning of substantial fines for violations.

The move comes as property owners are required to ensure that designated plots are properly cleared and officially declared through the relevant online platform. The updated timeline, running from April 1 to June 15, is intended to give owners additional time to comply with their obligations.

Who must comply with the new requirements

The obligation applies to owners, usufruct holders, tenants, and subtenants of vacant and uncovered plots. It includes empty plots within urban plans, as well as those located within 100 meters of settlement boundaries.

For out-of-plan areas, the requirement applies only if a building exists within the plot.

The online declaration process is carried out through the official platform akatharista.apps.gov.gr.

Clearance rules and warning on penalties

The process itself involves basic land maintenance, including the removal of dry grass, flammable materials, and general vegetation clearing.

Officials are urging property owners not to leave the work until the last minute, warning that demand for contractors and workers typically rises sharply closer to the deadline.

A key point of emphasis is compliance accuracy. Authorities stress that no one should declare a plot as cleared unless the work has actually been completed, as false declarations carry significant penalties.

However, in cases where a property has already been cleared but the declaration is not submitted, the fine has been reduced to €100.

Cooperation with local authorities

Proper coordination with local municipalities is also encouraged, particularly regarding the removal of collected waste after clearance operations.

Property owners are advised to notify local authorities in advance so that waste collection can be organized efficiently.
