A 57-year-old man has been arrested on the Greek island of Mykonos in connection with an extortion scheme targeting a local business, police said.
According to the Hellenic Police, the suspect demanded €50,000 from the manager of the business in exchange for stopping the submission of what authorities described as false noise complaints against the company.
After the victim reported the incident, officers from the Mykonos Police Sub-Directorate launched a coordinated sting operation. Police marked the €50,000 in cash that was to be handed over to the suspect before arranging the meeting.
The exchange took place at a prearranged location, where the 57-year-old accepted the money. Police officers monitoring the operation immediately intervened and arrested him in the act.
Authorities have filed criminal charges against the suspect on allegations of extortion.
He is expected to appear before the Syros Court of First Instance Prosecutor’s Office for further legal proceedings.
