Man Wanted by Peruvian Authorities Arrested at Athens Airport

Greek police detained a 71-year-old foreign national moments before his flight to Toronto after discovering an Interpol Red Notice issued by Peruvian authorities over allegations of child rape

A 71-year-old foreign national wanted by authorities in Peru on allegations of child rape was arrested at Athens International Airport by officers from the airport’s Security Department, the Hellenic Police said.

According to police, the suspect was located around midday on July 27 in the departures area of Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos”, shortly before boarding a flight to Toronto.

In a statement, the Hellenic Police said Peruvian authorities accuse the man of sexually abusing a minor in January 2011. Investigators allege that he exploited both his family relationship with the child and the fact that he was responsible for supervising her while her parents were away, committing sexual acts against her.

The arrest was made after officers identified that an Interpol Red Notice issued by Peruvian authorities was outstanding against him.

The suspect was brought before the competent public prosecutor.
