The autopsy on the body of Giorgos Mazonakis has been postponed until tomorrow, according to reports. The singer’s family has appointed a legal advisor, a development that led to the process being rescheduled.
The singer’s lawyer, Babis Lykoudis, addressed the circumstances surrounding his death in an interview with ERT, just hours after the news broke.
Lykoudis said that, according to information from Mazonakis’ personal doctor, the singer had no health problems. He also revealed he had spoken with Mazonakis about ten days before his death and found him in good spirits and especially creative.
The lawyer stressed that legal steps need to move forward immediately, including the appointment of a forensic technical advisor, so the circumstances of Mazonakis’ death can be investigated.
Visibly moved, Lykoudis spoke about the wave of grief the singer’s death has caused across the country. He described Mazonakis as a deeply well-liked man, someone harmless, adding that no one has ever had a bad word to say about him.
On their last conversation, about ten days before the tragic event, Lykoudis said Mazonakis was happy about a positive development in a personal matter and remained upbeat and creative, already planning his next professional steps. At the time, the singer was preparing for an upcoming concert, with nothing suggesting the tragic outcome that followed.
Lykoudis also described Mazonakis as an especially creative and active person with many professional plans ahead, both in music and television.
On next legal steps, Lykoudis clarified that responsibility now lies with Mazonakis’ family, with whom he has already been in contact. He explained that regardless of who takes on legal representation, it’s essential that the necessary steps move forward quickly, including the appointment of a forensic technical advisor.
Lykoudis declined to give further details about his contact with the family or the legal process ahead, saying only that he did not want to say more on the matter.
The Doctors Comments
New details about the circumstances that led to Mazonakis’ fatal cardiac arrest have emerged from the statement given by the doctor at the Stem Cell clinic, where the singer was undergoing treatment on Wednesday afternoon.
The doctor was asked by police to describe events starting from the day before, when Mazonakis first visited the clinic, up to the moment his condition worsened during a plasmapheresis procedure. Her account is now part of the ongoing investigation and will be assessed alongside the rest of the evidence in the case.
The first visit, one day earlier
According to her statement, Mazonakis had visited the Stem Cell clinic on Tuesday, one day before the fatal incident. During the initial check, she said she found that his body was under considerable strain, and that he was even having difficulty speaking.
She said he asked her what could be done quickly, since he had professional commitments coming up on September 20 and wanted to improve his condition fast. She then proposed the procedure offered at the clinic.
The treatment he chose to undergo
According to the doctor, Mazonakis was offered a blood purification procedure using specialized equipment. She said she explained it was a treatment without side effects or contraindications, and the singer agreed to go ahead. He returned the next day for the procedure, though according to her statement, his condition was not quite the same as the day before.
His condition on Wednesday
The doctor said that when Mazonakis arrived at the clinic on Wednesday, she noticed he had not slept and was still having trouble speaking. Despite this, she said his vital signs did not appear concerning at that point. The procedure began with the placement of an IV line in his right arm. A second IV line was then attempted in his left arm, which she said was necessary for the procedure. It was then, she said, that his condition changed abruptly.
The sudden deterioration
While attempting to place the second IV line, the doctor said she noticed a sudden change in the singer’s vital signs. She stated that his blood pressure and oxygen saturation began to drop, and the procedure was stopped immediately.
Staff at the clinic mobilized, with the doctor calling her husband, who was also on site. The two doctors began CPR while emergency services (EKAB) were notified.
