A significant change in weather conditions is expected across Greece this week, as a Mediterranean cyclone moving from North Africa brings rain, strong winds and widespread dust.

Meteorologists warn that the shift will begin on Tuesday, April 14, marking the end of a period of stable, warm weather that had dominated the first days of the month.

Weather deterioration from Tuesday

According to forecasts, rain will begin affecting several regions from Tuesday afternoon, gradually expanding to central and northern parts of the country by Wednesday.

From Thursday onwards, conditions are expected to become increasingly unstable, with mud rain—a phenomenon caused by rainfall mixed with airborne dust—becoming a key feature in many areas.

Cyclone to intensify conditions

Forecasters note that the approaching weather system, described as an Afro-Mediterranean cyclone, will move from Algeria toward the Aegean, bringing widespread rainfall and thunderstorms.

The combination of previously high temperatures and the incoming cooler, unstable air mass is expected to trigger intense weather events, including strong storms, possible hail and powerful winds.

Areas most affected

Mainland regions, particularly in western and central areas, are expected to experience the most severe conditions. Parts of southern Greece may also see heavy rainfall, raising concerns over localized flooding in already vulnerable areas.

Temperatures are forecast to drop from the unusually high levels recorded in recent days, returning to more typical seasonal values. Snowfall is also expected in mountainous regions at higher elevations.

African dust and reduced visibility

A notable feature of the system will be the transport of large amounts of African dust, which is expected to affect air quality and visibility across much of the country.

Skies may take on reddish or orange hues, while dust particles in the atmosphere are likely to intensify rainfall, contributing to the occurrence of mud showers.

Meteorologists say the dusty conditions will persist through midweek, with a gradual improvement expected later, as winds shift and help clear the atmosphere.
