Health authorities in Chania, Crete, are on alert after a high school student was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis shortly after returning from a school trip abroad.

The 17-year-old student participated in a five-day educational trip to various European countries. Upon her return last Friday, she developed symptoms consistent with meningitis and was immediately admitted to Chania Hospital. Doctors have confirmed the bacterial origin of her illness, though her condition is currently reported as stable.

The school administration quickly informed parents via email and notified the Hellenic National Public Health Organization (EODY). According to EODY guidelines, strict hygiene measures—including frequent handwashing and cleanliness protocols—are being enforced. Authorities have clarified that there is no need to close the school.
