New Democracy candidate Afroditi Nestora is being treated at the plastic surgery clinic of the burns unit at Papanikolaou Hospital in Thessaloniki, following the arson attack on her home. The attack killed her mother, Vagia, and injured her father along with three other residents of the apartment building in eastern Thessaloniki.

According to ERT, her condition is not considered worrying, though she still requires medical monitoring. The medical board is expected to decide within the next few hours whether she can be discharged so she can attend her mother’s funeral. According to the same sources, the service is planned for Wednesday, July 8, or Thursday, July 9, in Kozani.

Meanwhile, the investigation by Greek Police continues, with the counter terrorism unit reportedly very close to identifying those responsible for the attack.

Intensive search for the perpetrators

Investigators are focused on forensic evidence, looking for fingerprints or DNA on insulating tape, gas canister remains and the container that held the flammable liquid.

Security camera footage is also being analyzed in order to trace the suspects’ movements, including in the days beforehand, to determine whether they had scouted the locations where the explosive devices were placed.

All the evidence, combined with witness statements, is gradually forming a clearer picture for investigators. The counter terrorism unit believes three people took part in the attack, while officials are also examining whether a fourth person, or more, played a supporting role in planning and carrying it out.
