Weather forecasts for the New Year period have now been finalized, with the coming week set to follow a distinctly wintry pattern. While no widespread severe weather systems are expected, Greece will experience sporadic rainfall, biting cold, and localized frost beginning on New Year’s Eve and continuing into the first days of the year.
Monday: Cold but Mostly Clear
On Monday, weather conditions will be generally fair, with plenty of sunshine across mainland Greece. Temporary cloud cover is expected at times over the Ionian and Aegean islands.
Temperatures will fall, reaching around 9–10°C in northern Greece, 15°C in the west, up to 16°C in Crete, and 12–13°C in other regions.
Winds in the Ionian Sea will blow from northern directions at 3–4 Beaufort before shifting southerly. In the Aegean, strong northerly winds of up to 7 Beaufort are forecast in the morning, easing and turning westerly to southerly from midday.
In Attica, skies will be clear with sunshine but cold conditions. Temperatures will range from 5°C to 12°C. Northerly winds of 4–6 Beaufort in the morning will gradually weaken and turn southwesterly.
Similar conditions are expected in Thessaloniki, with sunshine throughout the day accompanied by sharp cold. Temperatures will range from 1°C to 9°C. Northerly winds will be strong in the morning, reaching up to 6 Beaufort, before easing significantly after midday.
Weather in the Coming Days
On Tuesday, rain is forecast in western and southern regions and the eastern Aegean, while the rest of the country will see limited cloud cover. Temperatures will rise slightly, reaching around 13°C in the north, 15–17°C elsewhere, and up to 18°C in Crete. Westerly winds will blow at 3–5 Beaufort, locally up to 6 Beaufort in the Aegean.
On Wednesday, intermittent cloud cover and light rain are expected in western and southern areas and the eastern Aegean. Temperatures will fall again, reaching around 8°C in central and northern Greece at midday, 12°C in other mainland areas, and up to 16°C in the southern Aegean. Northerly winds will prevail at 4–6 Beaufort, locally reaching 7 Beaufort in the Aegean.
New Year’s Day Forecast
On New Year’s Day, skies will be partly cloudy, with locally increased cloud cover in eastern and southern regions. Sporadic light rain is expected until midday, mainly in maritime and coastal areas. Light snowfall is forecast for eastern mountainous areas and northeastern semi-mountainous regions.
Winds will blow from northerly directions at 4–6 Beaufort. Temperatures will show no significant change, while localized frost is expected during the morning hours across mainland Greece.
