Greece remains in shock following a tragic accident at a military training range in Rhodes, where 19-year-old soldier Raphael–George lost his life during a grenade exercise. A 39-year-old sergeant was also seriously injured in the incident and remains hospitalized.

The investigation into the accident is still in its early stages, with military and police officials collecting crucial evidence to determine the cause. Authorities are exploring whether the explosion was due to human error, equipment failure, or a combination of both.

Investigation Details

The explosion occurred approximately 100 meters from the designated grenade range. Sources familiar with the area note that the site follows NATO-style training protocols, and there was no reason for grenades to be present in that specific spot.

Bomb disposal teams from the Rhodes Police and military experts conducted extensive searches not only at the explosion site but also in surrounding areas. One key focus is the grenade’s safety lever, considered the “black box” of the investigation. Officials are checking whether the lever had two closed safety holes, which could explain the malfunction.

A forensic bomb expert appointed by the soldier’s family is scheduled to examine the site today, alongside ongoing military inspections to recover all vehicles and equipment present during the exercise.

Final Farewell

Today, the town of Tympaki in Crete will hold the funeral for the young soldier. The service will take place at 11 a.m. at the Church of Saint Titus, where family and friends will gather to pay their respects. The coffin, draped with the Greek flag, arrived Thursday afternoon at Heraklion Airport and was taken to his family home in Tympaki overnight in accordance with local customs.

Sergeant’s Condition

The 39-year-old sergeant remains in serious condition at the 401 Military Hospital in Athens. Doctors report that while he is critically injured, he is expected to survive.
