Greek police carried out a large-scale security operation during the Easter vigil, leading to 14 arrests and the seizure of a significant number of dangerous items, including Molotov cocktails and flares.
The operation, conducted by the Attica Police Directorate, focused on preventing hazardous incidents during one of the most widely attended religious celebrations of the year.
Targeted checks in high-risk areas
Authorities carried out extensive checks on individuals and vehicles, particularly in areas where similar incidents had been recorded in the past. The goal was to prevent the use of incendiary devices, fireworks and firecrackers near churches and public gathering points.
Arrests were made across several districts, with the majority taking place in southern parts of the capital. Additional detentions were reported in nearby suburban areas.
Large seizure of hazardous materials
During the operation, police confiscated a total of 153 improvised incendiary devices, commonly known as Molotov cocktails, along with 38 marine flares, 26 firecrackers and five containers with flammable substances.
Some of the items were found in the possession of those arrested, while others had been hidden near places of worship.
Focus on public safety
According to police, the coordinated effort was aimed at ensuring public safety during Easter celebrations, which typically draw large crowds to churches for midnight services.
