PZL Aircraft Crashes During Landing at Mytilene Airport

A firefighting aircraft suffered an abnormal landing after returning from a patrol mission, with the pilot escaping without serious injury and being taken to hospital as a precaution.

An aircraft operated by the 359 Air Operations Squadron was involved in an accident at Mytilene Airport on Thursday, after it crashed onto the runway during landing.

The PZL aircraft was returning from a patrol flight when it reportedly experienced problems during its landing attempt shortly after 12:30 p.m. local time. According to initial information, the aircraft struck the runway with force, causing it to lift and then fall forward, ending up with its nose stuck on the ground.

Reports cited by Greek public broadcaster ERTnews said the incident was caused by a brake malfunction, with the aircraft’s braking system failing during the landing process.

The pilot managed to exit the aircraft on foot and was not seriously injured. However, he was taken to hospital as a precautionary measure.
