A 50-year-old Greek-British woman is in critical condition after being struck on the head by a falling rock while visiting the popular Nydri Waterfalls, on the Ionian Island of Lefkada on Monday.
According to local media, the accident occurred when a rock became detached from a cliff above the Dimossari (Nydri) Waterfalls, a popular natural attraction near the resort town of Nydri. The woman was visiting the site with a group when the rockfall occurred.
Emergency responders from the fire brigade and the national ambulance service carried out the rescue before transporting her to Lefkada General Hospital. She remains intubated with severe traumatic brain injuries, and doctors are preparing to transfer her to an intensive care unit, most likely at a hospital in Patras or Ioannina.
Several other visitors were at the waterfall when the rockfall occurred. Witnesses sought cover as rocks fell, while a small number of people sustained minor injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
The Dimossari (Nydri) Waterfalls are among Lefkada’s best-known natural attractions, reached by a short hiking trail through a narrow gorge ending at a roughly 12-meter waterfall and natural pool. The site attracts thousands of visitors each summer, although access involves walking beneath steep rocky slopes where falling rocks can pose a hazard, particularly after periods of weathering or heavy rainfall.
The incident comes amid a handful of tourist accidents reported across Greece during the summer season. Over the past week, authorities have responded to multiple injuries involving visitors at beaches, hiking trails and other outdoor destinations, prompting renewed calls for tourists to heed local safety guidance during periods of high temperatures and when visiting rugged natural attractions.
