Schools Closed in Parts of Greece Due to Severe Weather

Heavy snowfall, freezing temperatures and widespread infrastructure damage have forced school closures in parts of northwestern Greece, as authorities urge residents to limit travel and remain cautious

Several schools across northwestern Greece remained closed on Friday, January 9, due to severe winter weather that has caused major disruption in the region. Local authorities announced suspensions of classes as heavy snowfall, icy conditions and ongoing damage to infrastructure continued to affect daily life.

In mountainous areas of the Epirus region, schools in multiple communities were shut as a precaution against dangerous road conditions and expected frost. While primary and secondary schools were closed in some municipalities, public nurseries and daycare centers remained open, with parents responsible for deciding whether it was safe to transport their children.

In another part of the region, all primary and secondary schools were suspended following the declaration of a state of emergency, prompted by persistent extreme weather. Authorities cited safety concerns linked to landslides, road subsidence, power outages and damage to water supply networks.

Emergency services and municipal crews have been deployed across the wider area, using heavy machinery to clear snow, stabilize roads and address landslides. Salt is also being spread on road networks as temperatures are expected to drop further, increasing the risk of ice.

Officials have advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel in mountainous areas and stressed that winter equipment is essential. Flooding has also been reported in low-lying areas, adding to the challenges faced by local communities still recovering from previous storms.
