A major search operation is underway on Mount Olympus after a 25-year-old Spanish hiker was reported missing during an ascent to the mountain’s highest peak.
According to authorities, the climber began his hike from the town of Litochoro with the aim of reaching Mytikas, the summit of Greece’s highest mountain. However, his whereabouts have been unknown for several hours, triggering an extensive rescue effort.
The Spanish consulate in Greece was initially notified of the disappearance and subsequently alerted Greek police and fire services.
The search operation involves 16 firefighters and four vehicles, supported by specialist rescue units, police officers and volunteers. Drones are also being used to scan the area from the air, but no trace of the missing hiker has been found so far.
Concerns intensified after the 25-year-old failed to board a scheduled flight back to Spain on Thursday, according to local reports.
Rescue teams are facing challenging conditions on the mountain, where snow remains at higher elevations despite the season. Search efforts are currently focused at an altitude of around 2,400 meters, with crews continuing to comb the rugged terrain in hopes of locating the missing climber.
