Authorities are on high alert in Mytilene following the confirmation of a second case of a highly contagious livestock disease, intensifying concerns over its spread and impact on local farming.
The latest case was detected in a sheep farm located within a designated protection zone and has been epidemiologically linked to an earlier outbreak identified in cattle on March 16.
Emergency Measures Intensified
Following laboratory confirmation, veterinary authorities ordered the immediate culling of animals at the affected farm, in line with European regulations aimed at preventing further transmission.
Additional teams of veterinarians are being deployed to the island, with support expected from military specialists and experts from the European Commission to strengthen monitoring and tracing efforts.
The region has already been placed under a state of heightened civil protection readiness, allowing authorities to rapidly enforce containment measures.
Farmers Stage Protest
The outbreak has triggered strong reactions from local farmers, who have blocked the island’s main port in protest against the restrictions and their economic impact.
The blockade allows only departing visitors to travel, and is expected to remain in place until Monday evening.
Local business representatives have also expressed support for the farmers, announcing a temporary closure in solidarity with livestock producers and dairy workers affected by the measures.
