A serious maritime accident occurred on Saturday night in the waters near the Isthmus and the Gulf of Kechries, when a Malta-flagged yacht collided with a small fishing boat carrying two Greek nationals. One of the two men was taken to hospital unconscious.
Port authorities were alerted following the collision between the Malta-flagged yacht and the small fishing vessel in the sea area close to Isthmia and the Gulf of Kechries.
According to Coast Guard reports, the yacht was carrying six passengers and eleven crew members, while the small fishing boat had two Greek nationals aboard. The two fishermen were rescued by the yacht’s auxiliary boat and subsequently transported by a National Emergency Aid Center (EKAB) ambulance to Corinth General Hospital. Initial reports indicate that one of the two was unconscious when he arrived at the hospital.
The incident has raised a series of questions regarding the circumstances that led the two vessels onto a collision course. According to information obtained by Ta Nea, the small fishing boat is reported to have been travelling without its lights on — a detail expected to be examined by the competent authorities.
At the same time, questions have arisen as to whether the yacht had detected the small vessel in time through its available navigation and surveillance systems, and whether the required watch procedures were properly maintained on the bridge.
These are matters expected to be clarified through the preliminary investigation, maritime traffic data, and statements from those involved. Following the incident, the yacht reportedly remained immobilized in the Isthmus area, while the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
By order of the public prosecutor, the yacht’s Greek captain was arrested under expedited proceedings.
Precise responsibility for the collision has not yet been determined and will be established through the port authorities’ investigation and the case file.
