Three suspects in the death of the 19-year-old woman on Kefalonia are due to appear before a prosecutor on Friday.
The young woman was found unconscious in a central square in Argostoli early Tuesday morning and later died in hospital.
The three men—aged 26, 23 and 22—were granted time to prepare their defense and are scheduled to give statements to judicial authorities on Friday morning. All face felony-level charges.
According to reports, the suspects are expected to present differing accounts, with each attempting to shift responsibility. They are also expected to argue that the victim insisted on using drugs and was responsible for her condition.
One of the suspects, a 23-year-old acquaintance of the victim, claims he urged others to call emergency services, while alleging that the other two initially wanted to leave her in the street.
Investigators are examining discrepancies in the suspects’ testimonies, particularly regarding how they handled the situation after the woman lost consciousness.
New evidence and fourth person
Authorities have also identified a potential fourth individual connected to the case through phone records. A 66-year-old man was reportedly in contact with the victim on the night of her death via a messaging application.
According to findings, the victim told him she was in distress and had nowhere to go. The man allegedly transferred money to her and may have communicated with one of the suspects while she was already hospitalized.
Police arrested the three suspects on Wednesday after reviewing video footage that reportedly shows one of them carrying the unconscious woman to the location where emergency services later found her, while the others followed.
A preliminary forensic examination found no visible external injuries on the victim’s body, with further clarity expected from pending toxicology results.
The family’s lawyer said they trust the investigation and expect the full truth to emerge soon, particularly after the toxicology reports are completed.
The funeral of the 19-year-old is scheduled to take place later on Friday in Argostoli.
