A tanker truck belonging to a private company was caught emptying industrial waste from the Papadopoulos biscuit factory into the drain of a gas station, with the waste flowing into the Kifisos River.
According to information obtained by iefimerida.gr, the tanker emptied the waste into the gas station’s drain in the Aigaleo area, on Kifisou Avenue, around midday today. As a result, the waste made its way into the Kifisos River through the underground sewer network.
Police officers from the Waste Dumping Prevention Unit (O.A.A.A.) who responded to the scene arrested the foreign national driving the tanker in the act, as he was illegally dumping liquid industrial waste into the sewer drain. A second person, temporarily in charge of the gas station where the dumping took place, was also arrested.
The liquid waste came from various industries in Attica, including the Papadopoulos S.A. factory and the “Attikon” General Hospital, among others.
During the police operation, a specialist environmental officer from the Ministry of Environment and Energy was called to the scene and took a sample of the dumped load. Analysis confirmed the material was highly acidic industrial liquid waste.
A special team from EYDAP (the Athens Water Supply and Sewerage Company) also rushed to the scene and determined that the waste flows into the stormwater network and likely into the Kifisos River and, from there, into the sea, posing an immediate risk of pollution to surface waters and public health.
