Commuters in Thessaloniki faced significant disruption on Wednesday morning as the city’s metro service was unexpectedly suspended due to a technical issue.
According to an official announcement from the metro’s operating company, the shutdown began at 6:00 AM local time, and no trains are currently running along the full length of the line.
The operator did not provide further details on the nature of the fault or when full service might resume.
With the metro out of service, passengers are being advised to use bus lines or alternative transportation options to reach their destinations.
The Thessaloniki metro has been plagued with issues since the beginning of its construction, characterized by excessive delays, and the decades of mismanagement that inflated the project’s cost- to a staggering €3 billion for just 13 stations.
Not soon after its inauguration last November, one of the new metro carriages malfunctioned and abruptly stopped inside the underground, midway between two stations, forcing passengers to evacuate on foot through the tunnels.
