A toddler was hospitalized in Greece after accidentally ingesting a large quantity of fuel, in an incident that authorities say could have turned fatal. The child’s condition is now stable following emergency medical treatment.

The 18-month-old child consumed what was later identified as petroleum while on a family Easter holiday near the town of Aliveri, on the island of Evia.

According to local reports, the child briefly escaped parental supervision and drank from a bottle containing fuel. The parents immediately took the child to a nearby health center, where doctors acted quickly to remove the substance using appropriate medical procedures.

The toddler was later transferred by ambulance to the hospital in Chalkida for further monitoring and examinations and then to a children’s hospital in Athens.

Police have taken a statement from the father, who is facing charges of child neglect in connection with the incident.

In his testimony, the father claimed the accident was caused by incorrect labeling, saying that the child’s grandmother had placed the fuel in a mustard dispenser.

Medical officials confirmed that the child’s condition has stabilized, though doctors continue to monitor the situation closely.
